Your First Steps in RoP

Top 10 Things New Players Should Know

1. Alignment Defines Your Allies and Enemies

Your alignment (good or evil) determines who can attack you. Only opposite alignments can PK each other. Type help alignment to learn more. You cannot change alignment after creation!

2. Use CONSIDER and SCAN Before Every Fight

Always consider <mob> before attacking - it tells you if you can win. Use scan to see creatures in adjacent rooms. Sometimes consider fails, so try again if you get no response. The command gconsider works for groups.

3. Death Penalties Scale With Level

At level 1-20, death penalties are minimal - explore freely! Higher levels lose more XP on death. Your corpse contains your gear, so retrieve it quickly. Type help death for full details.

4. Eat, Drink, and Survive

Keep food and water in your inventory - you'll starve/dehydrate otherwise. All players can learn create light (level 2), create food (level 8), and the butcher skill. Each hometown has shopkeepers selling food and supplies. Springs and fountains provide free water so bring a canteen.

5. Learning Skills and Spells

Seek out trainers to practice skills and spells. Each race has limits on total skills/spells. Type help skills and help spells to see what's available. Many helpfiles tell you where to learn specific abilities (e.g., help bash). Most low-level skills and spells are taught around your homelands - ask on chat if you need help finding them.

Focus on leveling to 20 in your starting area (Training Grounds for good, Underground Marketplace for evil) before worrying about professions. Type help profession to see what you may be interested in. When ready, visit the ancient sage just outside the newbie area for information about joining a profession. Our world map is a great resource for navigating the wider world beyond the newbie areas.

6. Grouping for Safety and XP

Use follow <player> then the leader uses group <player> (max 6 members). Groups automatically share XP and can split gold with split. Use gtell to communicate with your group. Use config autoassist to automatically help groupmates.

To find people to group with, use the chat or gossip channels, or type who to see who's online. Chat messages have timestamps so you can see if you just missed someone. You can also check our Discord to find XP partners! Quests also provide good rewards - type help quest for more information.

7. Configure Your Settings and Know When to Run

Type config to see toggle options and fight for combat settings. Important: Toggle groundfighting OFF until you have more HP - it's dangerous at low levels! Set up your prompt (type prompt all for defaults). Use brief mode to reduce spam.

Set wimpy <hp> to auto-flee when HP drops low. Use flee to escape combat manually. Type help flee and help wimpy for details.

Watch your weight - being heavily burdened costs extra movement points per step and prevents flying. If you run out of moves, you'll be too exhausted to move at all! Drop loot you don't need, or visit a bank to store it in your personal vault.

8. Magic, Mana, and Gems

Casting spells costs mana. While you have some natural mana, gems are the main source of magical energy. hold gem to use one - it will charge up for casting. Gems come in four elemental types (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) that match different spells. Higher quality gems hold more mana and cast stronger spells. Type help mana and help gems for more details.

9. Remort for Power

At level 45, you can remort to restart at level 1 with permanent stat bonuses. Each remort makes you stronger. This is the path to becoming truly powerful. Type help remort for requirements.

10. Warpoints and PK Rewards

Killing opposite-alignment players earns warpoints, XP, and possibly loot. Warpoints can be used to rank up in professions and gain prestige - type topten to see the MUD's top player killers. Even if you avoid PK, understanding this system helps you survive.

Newbie Gear Vaults

Experienced players often leave gear in alignment vaults for newbies. Look for them in The War Room, close to the newbie areas. Ask on chat if you can't find them!
